Add the first person with Male, Female or Unknown on the toolbar. This is usually the proband: turn on Proband in the panel that opens.
Build out from them. With a person selected, Add a relative adds a partner, children, parents or brothers and sisters, already joined up, and lays the pedigree out again to make room.
Join people yourself with the tools under Connect. Partners: click two people. Child: click a relationship line, then the child. Twins: click two children of the same couple.
Describe each person in the panel: notes under the symbol (name, age, diagnoses with age at diagnosis), deceased, shading for affected, and symbols inside (carrier dot, P for pregnancy, a number for several people).
Add a key with Key: a box listing the colours in use, into which you type what each one means. Under File, a long entry can widen the key or wrap onto more lines; drag the right edge of a key that wraps to make it wider or narrower.
Click a line to change it: relationship lines can be consanguineous or separated, and a line of descent can be dashed for adoption.
Drag to move people. Dragging moves the whole connected family unless you switch on Move one person at a time under File. Drag the background to pan; scroll or pinch to zoom; Fit brings everything into view.
